The tractor unit and detachable back was a replacement for horse-drawn vehicles and Scammell Lorries Ltd so liked the idea they purchased the 3-wheeled design and following some refinements, this strong and sturdy vehicle became the favoured transport for pulling loads of  several tons.  A firm favourite with railway companies because of its manoeuvrability, it was a familiar sight in railway yards in particular, including LNER.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere we see it as one of their Express Parcel Service vans, decorated in a rich dark blue with black chassis and roof and the model features a red band along the skirt of the trailer. From the late 1920's railway companies had been searching for a vehicle that they could use that would replace the horse drawn carriage. The London and North Eastern Railway initially approached Napiers and although they created a few designs the project was sold to Scammell Lorries where the Mechanical Horse was designed by O.D North. One of the unique features was that it automatically coupled and uncoupled with trailers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Mechanical Horse was a large 3-wheeler with a steel frame with a wooden cab attached to it and came in two sizes with either a 3 ton or 6 ton load capacity. Power came from Scammell's own 1,125cc side valve petrol engine in the 3-ton model and the 2,043cc engine in the 6 ton model. The unique thing about the Mechanical Horse was that its single front wheel could turn 360 degrees and so produced a highly manoeuvrable vehicle. The mechanical horse remained largely unchanged until the late 1940's when the tractor section was redesigned creating the Scammell Scarab. Many rememember the Corgi (Mettoy) Routemaster that was manufactured in huge numbers. Back in the 1970's when ever we were short of production orders, we just inserted 250,000 buses into the programme. I recall many punch ups with the sales force, who would object strongly as they had the reponsibility of selling whatever was made. Needles to say when they were sold out and the warehouse was empty of Routemasters, they would quickly criticise the factory !\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Mettoy (Corgi) Routemaster was copied by many of the Hong Kong and Chinese manufacturers over the years. My favourite recollection was seeing a terrible copy by an Indian manufacturer. They had bought a sample, but the roof was not straight, there was a 'hump' on the top at the rear; on an internal cavity of the mould there was an insert that came lose from time to time - some production had slipped through with the 'hump' (probably night shhift) and that is what the Indian company had purchased for their sample.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn London there was a company called Seener, named after the owner, we tooled up a version for him. He wanted a smaller model around 15\/20% smaller to save costs, so we chose 1:76 scale - a lucky scale for Oxford. These carried the brand name SEEROL, named after the owners son \u003cstrong\u003eROL\u003c\/strong\u003eand \u003cstrong\u003eSEE\u003c\/strong\u003ener. We made around 500,000 of these during the 1980's.
