History

Created during a period when British engineering was highly esteemed globally, the Saunders Roe/British Hovercraft Corporation SR.N4 was remarkable in every sense; a powerful vessel that introduced a new era of swift, comfortable cross-Channel travel for the public. Launched into service in 1969, these Mountbatten-Class Hovercraft could travel at speeds exceeding 60 knots, enabling operators to perform 14 round trips daily during peak summer months.

Driven by four marine versions of the Rolls Royce Proteus turboprop engine, each engine powered a vast 5.8 metre diameter variable Dowty Rotol propeller mounted on pylons, which adjusted to provide the hovercraft with steering capability, along with powered fins and rudders. When the SR.N4 began service, this floating giant was the largest passenger hovercraft ever constructed, featuring the largest propellers ever made.

These fully amphibious vessels could access terminals located away from crowded seaports, yet still conveniently close for passengers. The arrival of one of these powerful crafts was unmistakable due to the tremendous noise generated by its Proteus engines.

Everything about this hovercraft was extraordinary, which also made it one of the most notable Airfix model kits ever created, now making a much-anticipated return to our 2026 Vintage Classics range in 1:144 scale.
