History
The Bristol Superfreighter was conceived in 1952 as an evolution of the Bristol Freighter, aimed at fulfilling the needs of car ferry services, transporting vehicles and their passengers over the English Channel. By 1954, Silver City Airways operated routes between Southampton-Cherbourg and Lympne-Ostend.
In 1963, Silver City merged with other carriers to create British United Air Ferries, continuing to utilise the Superfreighter. Cross Channel car ferry services concluded in the late 1960s as more economical sea ferry options gained popularity.
