Historical Background

During the First World War, the British War Department developed a large fleet of bogie rolling stock for use on its extensive 60cm gauge military railway network. These bogies were designed to support heavy-duty freight and specialist vehicles operating close to the front lines, where reliability and ease of maintenance were essential.

Following the end of the war, thousands of surplus bogies and wagons were sold to industrial companies and public narrow gauge railways throughout Britain and beyond. Their strong, practical design ensured they remained in service beneath a wide range of freight wagons, passenger coaches and maintenance vehicles for many years, with examples of this distinctive bogie type still preserved on heritage railways today.
