The British Medium Mark A “Whippet” tank was developed during the later stages of the First World War to address the limitations of the slow, heavy tanks that dominated early armoured warfare. Designed to move quickly across the battlefield, the Whippet was intended to operate beyond the trench line, attacking enemy infantry, supply routes, and command areas in a role comparable to cavalry. Entering service in March 1918, it represented a significant shift in British tank design, prioritising speed and manoeuvrability over heavy armour, and helped lay the foundations for later medium and cruiser tank designs.
