Historical Background

The Ffestiniog Railway was built to transport finished slate from the quarries around Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog, where it could be exported around the world. Specially designed slate wagons were developed to handle this unique traffic, allowing large quantities of dressed slate to be carried safely down the steep gradients of the railway.

The 3 Ton Slate Wagon became one of the railway's most recognisable vehicles, with 250 examples constructed over a fourteen-year period. Several variations were produced, including different frame designs and both braked and unbraked versions, reflecting the changing needs of the railway. Many examples have survived into preservation, with numerous wagons still associated with the Ffestiniog Railway today, ensuring this distinctive vehicle remains a favourite among narrow gauge railway enthusiasts and OO9 modellers.
