Description

British Royal Navy HMS Scylla Dido-Class Light Cruiser.
HMS Scylla was one of eleven Royal Navy Dido-class light cruisers, launched in 1940 and commissioned in 1942 during the height of the Second World War. Designed for fleet air defence and convoy protection, Dido-class cruisers were armed primarily with 5.25-inch dual-purpose guns, although Scylla was one of two equipped with 4.5-inch Mk III turrets.

Scylla saw significant wartime service. Early in her career, Scylla was assigned to Arctic convoy duties, delivering vital supplies to the Soviet Union. Scylla also served in the Mediterranean and was involved in escorting the Malta convoys.

During the D Day landings in June 1944, Scylla provided naval gunfire support for the Allied invasion of Normandy, but two weeks after D Day Scylla struck a mine off the French coast and suffered extensive damage. Though towed back to the UK, repair was deemed uneconomical. Scylla was decommissioned and later scrapped in 1950.
